Woman arrested after police pursuit

BEDFORD — A 37-year-old Lexington woman is facing a bevy of motor vehicle charges after she allegedly failed to stop for Billerica police on Middlesex Turnpike Thursday night, but was forced to stop when Bedford police employed “stop sticks” to puncture the tires on her 1993 Ford Mustang.

Victoria Cobuzzi, of 106 Laconia St., was charged by Billerica police with reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for a police officer, speeding, red light violation and marked lanes violation.

Bedford Police Chief Robert Bongiorno said that at 11:15 p.m. Bedford Police Officer Michael Sullivan heard a Billerica Police radio dispatch that a 1993 gray Mustang was wanted for failure to stop. The car was traveling at speeds of up to 100 mph, Bongiorno said.

Sullivan positioned himself just over the town line on Middlesex Turnpike and placed stop sticks all over the road. The stop sticks puncture the tires so that air escapes slowly, so the vehicle may come to a controlled stop.

As a result of the stop sticks, two of the Mustang’s tires went flat and the car stopped with regards to a mile up the road, Bongiorno said. When officers reached the car, the female driver had abandoned the car and fled on foot.

Officers caught up with her a short distance away, walking along Middlesex Turnpike. Initially, Cobuzzi refused to stop, but when she did she was arrested her without incident, he said.
