1337490077 84 Small town Ill. official pleads not guilty to stealing $53 million

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — The former comptroller of a little northern Illinois city pleaded not guilty Monday to charges alleging she stole more than $53 million of the public’s cash to fund a lavish modus vivendi and fabricate one of the nation’s foremost horse-breeding operations.

Rita Crundwell and her attorney, Paul Gaziano, refused to comment after leaving the federal courthouse in Rockford, where she pleaded not guilty to a single count of wire fraud. Ms. Crundwell, who is free on a recognizance bond, could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors allege that, beginning in 1990, the 58-year-old Ms. Crundwell stole more than $53 million from Dixon, where she had overseen public finances as the city comptroller since the 1980s, by diverting it to an account she had set up for personal use and misleading city officials.

Authorities say Ms. Crundwell purchased luxuriousness homes and vehicles and expended millions on her horse-breeding operation, RC Quarter Horses LLC, which formulated 52 world champions in exhibitions run by the American Quarter Horse Association.

Prosecutors say her scheme unraveled only when a co-worker filling in for Ms. Crundwell while she was on an extended vacation stumbled upon the mystery bank account.

Her arrest stunned tiny Dixon, a little city along a picturesque vein of the Mississippi River when it comes to a two-hour drive west of Chicago in Illinois farm country. Its 16,000 persons are largely lower middle class, working at factories, grain farms, the local prison and a hospital, amongst other places.

Prosecutors likewise have filed a lawsuit seeking 311 registered quarter horses and dozens of foals that are expected to be born this spring. Prosecutors said while announcing the lawsuit that they plan to have the horses sold and to give the proceeds to Dixon, where the late President Ronald Reagan lived as a boy.

Almost three weeks before he was scheduled to appear in court on charges involving possession of a controlled substance, 44-year-old Carlos Salgado of unincorporated Des Plaines passed from physical life of a single gunshot wound following a confrontation with local police.

Salgado, who local police say had an broad criminal background and has had contact with Des Plaines police in the past, passed away at regarding 3:15 p.m. Sunday in a parking lot next to a car in the 1900 block of Touhy Avenue in front of a little restaurant that was closed at the time. The gunshot that authorities believe resulted in his death was to Salgado’s armpit. The shooting has been ruled a homicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. For a while after the shooting a makeshift covering shielded Salgado’s body from public view.

A police official confirmed yesterday (Tuesday) that more than one gunshot was fired, however, it is not known who fired the shots other than one by one of the two officers on the scene. On Monday, a Des Plaines police investigator said that Salgado allegedly tried to run down the officers with his car.

On Monday, attorney Greg Kulis, representing Tracie Salgado, Carlos Salgado’s wife, filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court asking for “fair and reasonable compensation” as well as info in regards to how her husband died.

Kulis said he took action to subpoena Des Plaines police records, including squad car and nearby businesses videos, radio communications, detectives’ notes and the names of the officer or officers who fired shots. As of late yesterday afternoon, Kulis said he has not been given a copy of the official police report of the incident. He added that he has heard numerous rumors including that Mr. Salgado tried to run over police with his car.

“I’d be very astonished if her husband (his client) tried to run an individual over,” Kulis said. Kulis also said that Salgado was returning home after eating a meal of spaghetti with a friend.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force was called in shortly after the shooting to conduct an investigation—a procedure occurrence when a police officer has discharged his firearm. Part of the investigation includes interviewing the two officers and any witnesses.

“There were independent witnesses,” the Journal & Topics was told yesterday by a high-ranking Des Plaines police officer. The scene where Salgado passed from physical life is on the north side of Touhy west of Cedar Drive not far from a 7-11 commodious store. The two officers suffered minor injuries and were taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where they were treated and released. Acting Police Chief Mike Kozak said the two patrolmen will have to visit with a psychological doctor before returning to active duty—a section requirement.

Authorities have freed few details of the incident explaining that before they do so, the interviewing of witnesses and the responding officers will have to be conducted. Kozak said a public statement could come as early as today (Wednesday).

Reports indicate that Salgado was ordered to pull over into the parking lot by one of the officers for an alleged traffic violation. At that point, the patrolman called for backup and a short time later a second officer arrived on the scene.

A check of Cook County court records shows that Salgado has a criminal history dating back to the late 1980s. While some of the charges filed versus him were dropped, there was an incident in 2000 in which he used a vehicle as a weapon, said a spokesman for Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. In that same incident, Salgado was charged with two felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and two felony counts of possession of a weapon. 1337467509 65 SoftPad Turns Your iPhone Into A Remote Control For Windows PC [Cydia]

There are a good deal of ways of turning your iPhone into a keyboard, mouse or a monitor for any desktop system. You may get a lot of apps and tweaks that let you do that, but not a good deal of of them have the capacity to assume these roles simultaneously. SoftPad is one of the most comprehensive and easy-to-configure Windows remote control apps for iPhone that we have seen so far. The Cydia app has three main modes; you may use your iOS device as a mouse or keyboard for your PC, or control the entire Windows interface through your iDevice’s touchscreen. Moreover, SoftPad makes it exceedingly easy to switch among the three modes, adding another layer of convenience over it is functionality.

As is the case with most such apps, SoftPad works thru a desktop server. To download the server application for Windows, go here and grab it from the Downloads section. After you have installed the SoftPad Server to your PC (just extract the downloaded ZIP file and run the EXE within the extracted folder), go to the Cydia store on your phone, and grab SoftPad from the BigBoss repo. Also, make sure that your PC and iDevice are on the same WiFi network, and note down your computer’s IP address.

Run the iPhone app, and hit the green add button from the bottom bar. Enter the network’s name and the IP address of the PC (leave Port No. unchanged). Back in the app’s homepage, tap the antenna icon and wait for the SoftPad iPhone app to with great success connect to the server. Once the app makes that connection, you will be brought to the SoftPad choice menu, where the TrackPad, Keyboard and SoftTouch menus are listed. The track pad comprises of a plain screen, with left and right click buttons available at the top. The keyboard is in truth thorough, and has got just regarding all the buttons you will ever need. The SoftTouch mode loads the computer’s screen to your iDevice, and you may navigate through it by simple scrolling (a single tap constitutes a click). Apart from the capacity to let users scroll through the screen by way of touch, SoftPad has 4 directional keys to add more comfortableness for users. If you want to end the connection with the server, go to the main selection screen and hit the red power button. To switch amongst the app’s 3 modes, you don’t have to go to the selection screen again and again, as the shortcuts for all of them will stay visible allround the app.

SoftPad, and it is desktop companion, are available for free (though the iPhone app is ad-supported), and all you need is a jailbroken iDevice and a Windows PC. Do give it a try if you are looking for a remote controller for Windows.

Intro

AudioControl is not a household name for most persons but they have been in business for over 30 years. They construct instrumentation for the car, home and professional markets and their productions are passed around worldwide. The office is outside Seattle, WA. An increasing amount of their business is habit AV systems and multi-room systems. They construct professional audio test equipment, AV distribution systems, and home AV equipment, including AV amps, preamps, receivers and processors. I introductory read with regards to them in a CES report. After researching them, I became mesmerized in attempting out their preamp/processor. Past models have received very positive reviews.

I have been waiting for a new AV preamp for when it comes to four years now. There have been largely two price ranges in AV preamps in the past: beneath $3000 and over $9000. In the underneath $3000 range were the Marantz, Integra, Adcom, Onkyo, and Emotiva. Outlaw has been promising a new AV preamp for at least four years. A couple of years ago I was hoping the Outlaw with the Trinnov processing would become a reality, but no such luck. Emotiva has offered a for less $700 preamp, but from remarks on their internet site it has been somewhat problematic. Denon has an AV preamp at with regards to $7500. In the over-$9000 area there are the McIntosh, Mark Levinson, Classe, Krell, Lexicon, Cary, Meridan, and Anthem products. Some of these audiophile AV preamps are over $30,000. Limitations of cash and space require that I combine my video and audio systems into one system. It would have been much requiring little effort for me to find an AV preamp if it was just for video. I am firstborn of all an audiophile, so any preamp will have to be capable to fabricate audiophile sound on music to be considered.

In the stores I have heard the Marantz, Onkyo, Integra, McIntosh and Anthem preamps. The Anthem and McIntosh were in systems in excess of $50,000. None of them gave me a sentiment that they had promise that they could fabricate audiophile sound. For me to take them home to try, I necessitated at least galore sense that there was audiophile sound there. To me they all seemed to have more theatre sound than musical sound. They all sounded a bit sluggish and undetailed in their sound. I would think that these parts will have to sound far better than they did.  I will confess that a store circumstance is not a good way to judge the sound of a component. At home, my scheme is in a highly-treated room with a highly-tweaked system. In a store circumstance I have only heard 10 or 12 schemes in stores that sound good in 35 years. Stores have troubles with using lots of tweaks. A client who purchased a element in a store that had a highly tweaked scheme would in all probability be very disappointed with the sound when he got home with the element and put it into a non-tweaked system. There is likewise the cost of the tweaks and the fact that galore of the tweaks don’t look that good. Most dealers do not like admitting that tweaks may be very cost effective improvements in sound.

I have been very pleased with the sound of my scheme using a heavily-modified Outlaw 950 AV  preamp. But I wanted video switching, newer digital chips and more flexibility. One audiophile friend questioned replacing my old preamp because I had such good sound with my old one. I ought to confess that I had worries myself. First of all would running my video signals through a preamp reduce the quality of the video? The second was whether it would sound as good as the old preamp. To be fair, I will say that most of the good sound of the old system was using a Jena Labs-modified Oppo 83SE with multi-channel bypass on the Outlaw.

Appearance and Build Quality

The unit came in a big reasonably heavy box (by today’s standards). The unit is reasonably huge and weighs 27 pounds. I was enjoyably astonished by the looks. It genuinely looks rather nice. The face plate is surrounded by black shiny metal raised metal with a clear plastic covered black plate over most of the front panel. On this panel is a huge display with blue data display, 11 little buttons and a big volume control knob. The buttons have a little blue light description over each, and is readable from a distance. The unit is 1.5 inches taller and deeper than my Outlaw 950. It is designed for either rack or non-rack mounting needs and has both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs. It also weighs with regards to twice as much. Build quality is very good and it looks much better than the other AV preamps I have seen.

Input and Outputs

One strong point of the AudioControl Maestro M4 is it is a lot of selections of inputs and outputs. It has 5 video inputs. These are AV, DVD, DVR VCR, and satellite.  Each of these has four possible video inputs. This is very utile for users that have older video equipment. Most innovative preamps have annihilated the composite and S-video inputs and have fixed element inputs. It has 3 audio-only inputs, though any of the unused video inputs also have audio inputs. They are CD, Tape and Phono. It has 7.1 analog inputs. It has 3 coax and 4 optical digital audio inputs. Some preamps now are not including phono inputs any longer. It also has Ethernet and USB inputs. The Ethernet connection is applied for updates and for Internet radio. The USB connection is for updates and playing musical files. It has programing and control RS232 inputs, along with a mike/AUX input. It has zone 1, 2, and 3 IR and trigger inputs, plus 2 HDMI outputs. It likewise has zone 2 and 3 S-video and composite outputs, with zone two shared video on zone 3. There are likewise VCR, DVR, and Main composite and S-video outputs, and it has a factor video output also. On the audio side it has 7.3 RCA and balanced main outputs. That’s right: there are 3 discerned subwoofer outputs. There are also optical and SPDIF digital audio outputs. It has RCA analog outputs to Tape, VCR and DVR. plus a headphone output. All of these inputs and outputs are the reason for the huge chassis.

Setup

Unless you are intimate with AV setup, you may need to have aid from your dealer. The connections are more or less straight forward. Care ought to be taken to not hook up two dissimilar audio or video connections to the same input. With 4 dissimilar ways to hook up to each of the 5 video inputs, it may happen. Audio may be input to any of the video inputs in 3 ways. HDMI, optical or SPDIF digital, and coax analog. The tape and CD inputs may have either digital or analog connections. The phono input has an analog input. The Maestro only has a basic room set up for audio, doing speaker distance and volume. This may either be done mechanically with a supplied mike or manually with test tones, tape measure and a sound meter. I preferent the manual method. The identification screens for the inputs may be a bit daunting. The remote (which costs $115 extra)  is on the big size, but reasonably easy to use. It is unquestionably not your frequent cheapie remote. The backlighting for the keys is very useful. The manual covers only the basics. A indepth manual for this unit would be more than a hundred pages. I am a scientific routine writer, so I have galore idea in regards to what that would take.

What the Unit Doesn’t Include

As already noted the Maestro itself does not have room correction for frequency response like Audyssey room correction in the under-$3000 units or the proprietary room correction of the more costly unit. AudioControl offers this in a distinguished unit called the Diva. McIntosh is coming out with a for less unit at with regards to $6000. One of the main divergences in this unit and their $13,000 unit is the lack of their proprietary room treatment. I recognise various humans that do not use the Audyssey because they feel that it hurts the sound. I would like to have heard the Trinnov processor, which corrects for frequency, speaker angle, distance, sound level and phase of each speaker. No one has veritably got it to to the full or entire extent work in an affordably-priced unit. The Maestro M4 doesn’t have an AM/FM tuner.  [I would find that an odd omission...Ed.] The under-$3000 units and the Anthem have this. I have never employed the AM/FM tuner in my Outlaw.

What It Has Extra

First, it has a five year guarantee, Dolby volume control, the most recent HDMI 1.4 with 3D pass-through, and  Wolfson 24/192 DACs. It converts all modern AV audio formats and converts bequest video formats to greatest or most complete or best possible video quality thru the HDMI outputs. There are broad automation integration capablenesses and Internet radio capability.

It would have been nice to have

DVD-Audio and SACD conversion in the preamp would be nice. More selective information on the display of what digital audio and video signals was being input. I do not mean the audio surround formats. I mean audio signal sample rate and digital video info transfer rate. But no preamp I have seen has this. A couple of more analog-only inputs could also be useful.

Performance

My worries in regards to putting video signals through the preamp were speedily eliminated. It put through a outstanding video signal and I found it almost the same as a direct video feed from my Oppo thru HDMI. The digital conversion of CDs was more or less better than the Oppo digital conversion thru analog output. It had the added bonus of being capable to synthesize surround from the CD. On Cyndi Lauper’s outstanding album At Last, Cyndi’s voice rings out clear and strong. Both the recording and performance are on the edge and the Maestro lets you listen it all. On the digital conversion from surround formats thru HDMI versus the analog outputs of the Oppo, it was a little mixed. The Oppo had a lighter more airy sound with somewhat more little detail. The bass and dynamics were unquestionably better on the Maestro and it likewise had more or less more inviolable effigy focus. On Patricia Barber’s  Companion  album The Maestro had tighter bass, better dynamics and a more solid image. The Oppo was a little more spectacular sounding, but a little less focused. On the Arts Audio 96/24 DVD Percussion XX the Maestro proved to have better bass, dynamics, and imaging, but the Oppo had somewhat more air. The Maestro is in all probability going to get even better as it further breaks in. I have with regards to 40 hours on the Maestro. It ordinarily takes from 100 to 200 hours before a factor is at it is best. The next question is how the multi-channel output of the Oppo through the Maestro and my old heavily-modified Outlaw 950 compared. They are both on audio bypass mode. This is largely for SACD and DVD-audio. On the Runnicles Telarc Carmina Burana,  the voices are better disunited and clearer with the Maestro. The bass and dynamics of the Maestro brought my sound to a new level. The Internet radio is a bit cumbersome to work with. I have expended only assorted hours with it. It would take a lot of hours to go through the hundreds of stations available and put them into your favorites, so you may more effortlessly find them. Most of the stations are 128 kbps MP3. The sound that I have heard is like mediocre CD sound. [But there are a great deal of at higher sampling rates that sound fine. My Integra provides a list of the most eminent quality ones...Ed.]

Conclusions

To say the least the Maestro M4 has met and exceeded my expectations. Its video processing and bypass are both excellent. The audio bypass sound is the best I have heard. It beats out my heavily-modified Outlaw, which I had antecedently considered one of the best preamps I have heard—and that includes stereo preamps. Its digital decoding matches or beats the Jena Labs modified Oppo. (The altered Oppo is one of the best sound origins I know of.) The unit looks better than most AV units. The Maestro has as good or better input and output sets than I have seen on any preamp. It has capacity for automation and multi-room setups and gives the listener a assortment of sound options. If you have a problematic room you might consider adding their Diva room processor or another unit. The Diva is $10,000 and is a professional quality component. Unfortunately I can’t compare it is performance with the other high end AV preamps, because I have not had them in my system. I nonetheless do not feel I need to, since I am very happy with the Maestro and am going to add it to my system. I am very glad they put the cash into audio quality rather than extras which I do not need.

1337425258 75 Volt Lights Up London!

LUTON, UNITED KINGDOM – May 18, 2012: It has already won glowingpraise from the world’s motoring press, but now the Chevrolet Voltreally knows how to shine, after the American manufacturer pulled the wrapsoff another world-first…

Renowned automotive artisan Ian Cook made art history in London bycreating an effigy of the Volt using paint that reacts to ultra-violetlight, efficaciously making it glow versus the board on which it iscreated.

The effigy is based on a nocturnal effigy of the Volt in London shot bywell-known car photographer Dominic Fraser, and in normal light looks likea somewhat bright and prominent artwork, but when it is hit by ultra-violet‘black’ light, the effigy comes to life and appears to rise infront of it is background.

29-year old Cook from Solihull, W Midlands, produced the effigy in amostly dark studio using radio-controlled Chevrolet Camaro models, themselves dipped in UV paint, primarily so they could be visible in thestudio.

“This is, rather simply, the most difficult piece of work I’ve evercreated,” said Cook. “I was more or less creating it blind.

“The idea was to invent an effigy that was as progressed andmould-breaking as the Chevrolet Volt itself, while at the same time keepingin mind it is electric powertrain. Chevrolet was one of the original vehiclemanufacturers to completely recognise my radio-controlled car art and, indeed, make the most of it. As the Volt takes electric motoring to a new level, Iwanted to take my art to a new level by doing something wholly new anddifferent.”

The Volt was finished for the duration of a three-day car art workshop held at theheadquarters of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) inLondon, for the duration of which Cook demonstrated his art in interactional sessions toschool children and art students.

He also applied the event to invent one of his most elaborate images yet, ofhis own SpART – a Chevrolet Spark in a rather distinctive livery.

Cook has been related with Chevrolet since 2008, when he createdimages of the Camaro Convertible and Beat conception cars at the London MotorShow. He is a judge in the brand’s Young Creative Chevrolet appliedarts competition, and produces all of his work using radio-controlled carsand old tyres.

1337409912 99 Entertaining And Stimulating Electric Powered RC Cars

  • Unique Chevrolet Volt art formulated using UV paint
  • Luminous ‘world-first’ effigy by widely known and esteemed automotive artisan Ian Cook, using radio-controlled Chevrolets
  • Time-lapse video of the work’s creation on Chevrolet UK facebook site

It has already won glowing praise from the world’s motoring press, but now the Chevrolet Volt in truth knows how to shine, after the American manufacturer pulled the wraps off another world-first…

Renowned automotive artisan Ian Cook made art history in London by creating an effigy of the Volt using paint that reacts to ultra-violet light, efficaciously making it glow versus the board on which it is created.

The effigy is based on a nocturnal effigy of the Volt in London shot by well-known car photographer Dominic Fraser, and in normal light looks like a reasonably bright and prominent artwork, but when it is hit by ultra-violet ‘black’ light, the effigy comes to life and appears to rise in front of it is background.

29-year old Cook from Solihull, W Midlands, developed the effigy in a for the most part dark studio using radio-controlled Chevrolet Camaro models, themselves dipped in UV paint, principally so they could be visible in the studio.

“This is, rather simply, the most unmanageable piece of work I’ve ever created,” said Cook. “I was more or less creating it blind.

“The idea was to formulate an effigy that was as innovative and mould-breaking as the Chevrolet Volt itself, while at the same time keeping in mind it is electric powertrain. Chevrolet was one of the firstborn vehicle makers to completely know my radio-controlled car art and, indeed, make the most of it. As the Volt takes electric motoring to a new level, I wanted to take my art to a new level by doing something wholly new and different.”

The Volt was finished for the duration of a three-day car art workshop kept at the headquarters of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) in London, for the duration of which Cook demonstrated his art in interactional sessions to school children and art students.

He likewise employed the event to create one of his most elaborate images yet, of his own SpART – a Chevrolet Spark in a rather distinctive livery.

Cook has been affiliated with Chevrolet since 2008, when he formulated images of the Camaro Convertible and Beat conception cars at the London Motor Show. He is a judge in the brand’s Young Creative Chevrolet applied arts competition, and brings about all of his work using radio-controlled cars and old tyres.
