“What a better place to have an all-weather playground than under your house? It’s just a few steps away when I have time for it, it’s a comfy place to be when it’s –30C outside,” he told Carscoop.

Mystery Over Denver

Posted on May 20th, 2012 in Radio Control Cars, Airplanes and Boats | No Comments »

1337500849 25 Mystery Over DenverMay 20, 2012 Updated May 18, 2012 at 8:00 PM PDT

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a mystery in the sky.

A unidentified object flying over Denver almost caused a mid-air collision Monday evening.

As far as investigators know the object did not show up on radar.

Investigators believe the object, whatsoever it is, could pose a severe safety hazard to planes.

Radio transmissions from LiveATC.net assert a nervous-sounding pilot reported a strange object at 5:17 p.m. Monday.

The pilot is heard telling air traffic control: “A remote controlled aircraft, or what? Something just went by the other way … About 20 to 30 seconds ago. It was like a huge remote-controlled aircraft.”

The corporate jet, a Cessna Citation 525 CJ1, was flying at 8,000 feet above sea level over Cherry Creek when the mystery object came close sufficient to make any pilot nervous.

“That’s an issue because now we have something in controlled airspace that poses a danger,” former NTSB Investigator and aviation analyst Greg Feith said.

Feith listened to the air traffic recordings and believes the object could be one of three things:

- A military or law enforcement drone. – A remote controlled aircraft. – A big bird.

“Was this an unmanned vehicle that was share of galore sort of law enforcement operation? Was this somebody that had flown a huge model aircraft inadvertently into the airspace? Or was it just a bird that caught the pilot’s eye so he believed it was an aircraft but could have been a very huge wing span bird,” Feith said.

Any one of those things may be catastrophic if it collides with an airplane.

Three years ago, a bird strike took down a mercantile airliner that managed to land safely in the Hudson River. All the passengers survived.

FAA spokesman Mike Fergus says investigators will talk to the pilot and look at other clues.

“The threat is there from a collision standpoint. We’ll do as much as we may here to undertake to track back what time it was. Probably talk with some remote-control clubs, that type of thing,” Fergus said.

The mission of investigators now is to distinguish that mystery object before another close call, or worse.

Remote Control Cars, Safety Technology and Car Accidents

1337484609 15 Remote control cars, safety technology and car accidents

A recent Fox News article took a look at new engineering being formulated in China by the car manufacturer BYD known as remote-control driving. The engineering allows drivers to use a remote control system to get started their vehicle, move it backward or forward, turn it right or left and to travel at a restricted speed.

The car manufacturer notes that the feature is a solution for permitting drivers to get their car out of a parking spot that isn’t wide sufficient for the driver to exit once parked. The company likewise sells the feature on it is capacity to grant driver and passengers to be picked up curbside without encountering the elements. Unfortunately, remote control driving sounds like a recipe for disaster in terms of car accidents.

The article notes that the technology is not the like of what you would find in United States, due largely to fear of product liability lawsuits. Still there is no doubt that the idea is innovative, even if dangerous.

What is interesting when it comes to the article is it is expression of nostalgia for times when car makers didn’t include the latest electronic technology for the preventative action and minimization of car accidents. Never mind the fact that such engineering has the goal of saving lives and preventing life-altering injuries.

Obviously smart engineering science cannot prevent all accidents, but it is somewhat ridiculous to pine for a time when accidents were more likely and vehicles involved in them were more likely to cause injury and death to their passengers. Such accidents are a severe matter, both for those responsible and for the victims. We need technology on the side of making automobiles safer for both irresponsible drivers and accident victims.

Joe Moses was the overall winner of Isle of Man Youth Tour, winning the junior category in front of Jochum Buchener with Joe Kirkham completing the top three.

Stage three report (Juniors)

Planet X rider Jacob Scott from Holmfirth in Yorkshire won the third and final junior stage in the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man Youth and Junior Tour, sprinting clear of his six breakaway rivals at the end of a 92-kilometre road race around Ramsey.

The 16-year-old kept off Dutch rider Jochum Buchener (Sleepwell Hotels) for the win, while Sportscover’s Joe Moses, 18 and from Bradford, took third spot.

The 102km race comprised six laps of a circuit on the east coast of the Island taking in Ramsey, Bride and Andreas. Stage two winner Sebastian Baylis (Mid Devon CC) started the race in the yellow jersey with a 12-second vantage over Stuart McCluskey (Leslie Bike Shop) and 13 seconds over Dutchman Jorrit Lind (Sleepwell Hotels/Viking Waterland) who was third on GC. But the basi 20 riders on GC started the final stage within 40 seconds of the race leader so there was a great deal to race for.

Matt Flynn (Mountivation) launched the initial significant attack and had built up a greatest or most complete or best possible lead of around two minutes. But he was caught by the peloton with three laps to go and on the climb to Bride – the only real climb on the course – three riders launched the move that was to determine the race.

Josh Knights (Mountivation) Callum Ferguson (Halesowen A&CC) and Joe Kirkham (Hargroves Cycles) went clear but were soon joined by four other riders – British National Junior Road Race Champion Dan Pearson (Wilier/Live To Ride), plus Scott, Buchener, and Moses.

As the early morning sunshine gave way to dark clouds and rain the seven escapees speedily increased their vantage to over a minute while Baylis – who had no team mates in the field – could feel the yellow jersey being ripped off his back. Moses, who had started the day in 10th place and 30 seconds off yellow – was the most eminent placed GC rider in the break and had the most to gain.

After completing six laps of the course the leaders turned onto the finishing straight on Ramsey seafront and it was Scott who won the sprint. GC results were still to be confirmed at the time of writing, but it is believed that Moses gained sufficient time on stage 3 to take the overall victory.

Full Size Car and Electric RC Cars

When we heard with regards to electric RC cars, we tend to think introductory of the toy cars that we may maneuver or control on the racetrack. In fact, the number of humans gathering these toys is growing day by day. Kids are no longer the ones that are excessively affected emotionally to play these miniature cars. Even adults have made playing these cars as their hobby. But who may blame them? The conception behind this electric type of toys is very interesting. It gives the user the liberty to control it from a distance.  But have you ever thought of riding an electric RC vehicle one of these days. That might some out of the question for now but a lot of persons are now agreeably diverting this idea of applying the conception of the electric RC toy cars to the real ones.

Now, how soon will full-size cars become electric RC Cars? It has started happening!  Although today’s full size cars cannot be run totally as electric RC cars, there are numerous technical inventions utilizing the principles for simple processes and likewise for car designs.  Many new cars today are equipped with keyless locks and ignition, enabling the driver to lock, unlock, turn on and off engines, lights and alarm systems.

Cars with these details in general use a key fob shaped remote. A more recent innovation utilizes Bluetooth and smart phone engineering science to carry out the locking and engine commence functions in a regular car.

Intelligent parking schemes are another innovation that is being added to the function of the regular cars.  The basi automatic parallel parking scheme was introduced in 2003 by a Japanese car manufacturer followed by other Japanese and German car companies in 2007 and 2009.  These systems also use a key fob shaped remote to activate the system.  Other new tech ideas have included accident avoidance schemes that rely on car sensors to distinguish drifting into another lane or getting too close to another vehicle or hazard.

This is an important innovation for the distracted or impaired driving.  However they do not replace the driver’s responsibility.

German car manufacturers presently use full size remote run prototypes for the duration of the design process.  The vantage of this system is that a remote electronics may more precisely make changes than a test driver.  Electronic schemes are used to valuate steering dynamics to make design improvements in car handling and safety. Improved steering dynamics will fetch the world closer to electric RC cars getting a viable option for the road.

Although remote controlled gliders and airplanes are being used presently by the military, there are various obstacles to using full sized remote control cars on the road.  Part of this is due to the unpredictability of humane drivers on the road.  The other obstacles are legal as local laws are not rather ready for the remote vehicle technology.  In the meantime, car manufacturers are continuing with improvements to make cars more automatic and less dependent on the humane driver.  For now, electric RC cars may be applied as a toy or sparetime activity or in car engineering science research.
