Scofield

I don’t believe in firstborn sin, but I think I believe in primary jealousy. I reached this decision after two little boys visited our house at the same time: 3-year-old grandson Jasper and 1-year-old great-grandson Roman (or Charlie, as we’ve nicknamed him).

It was posing no difficulty when Charlie/Roman was just a little baby who smiled and burbled at his older cousin. Now it’s getting harder. Charlie is old sufficient to want to creep around after Jasper, grabbing the toy he was fascinated in, knocking down the Lincoln Log cabin just before the roof was in place.

The primary few times this kind of thing happened, Jasper said, with decreasing goodnatured tolerance each time, “No, Roman.” “I was using that, Roman.” “You’re not supposed to grab, Roman.” Then, frustrated, he yelled in Roman’s face, just with regards to scaring him out of his diaper.

Roman cried in fear, his mama picked him up to ease him, and Jasper’s mama took him apart for a little talk.

“Roman’s just a baby, Jasper,” she said. “You’re not supposed to yell at babies and scare them. You have to use your words.”

“But, Mama,” Jasper explained, “Roman doesn’t perceive words.”

Perfectly reasonable to a 3-year-old. Not so much so for the 1-year-old.

At the last visit, upon arrival, Roman’s daddy set him down inside the front door. Jasper cried “Roman!” and ran toward him at full speed. I doubt I was the only adult keeping my breath. But Jasper screeched to a stop inches from the baby, leaned in and gave him a kiss. Why is the camera always on a shelf in the bedroom at a time like this?

Jasper had evidently been briefed on how to act with a much littler child, and he tried admirably. Besides, it has to be flattering to have a little shadow following you around, attempting to do the grownup things you do.

Charlie/Roman, on the other hand, became acquainted with the green-eyed monster.

You wouldn’t think a 1-year-old’s life experiences would give him a frame of reference for jealousy. Surrounded by adults who dote on them, neither little boy has ever been short-changed for attention or affection.

But each time he saw Jasper on my lap, Charlie hurried over, lifted his arms, and said “Up! Up!” God gave grandmas and great-grandmas two knees for a reason. There was room for both of them.

Except at the computer. Evidently Charlie considers this position his own sacred place, not to be shared. He loves the folder of pictures I scanned from the Celestial Seasons Tea Factory souvenir book we brought back from a trip assorted years ago. It has teddy bears sipping tea by the fireplace, cuddling in blankets, picking berries and paddling boats down blueberry creeks. Charlie anticipates each page and has the suitable responses: blows on pretend hot tea; smacks “num-num” when we eat pretend berries; whispers “Hot! Hot!” at the pretend fireplace.

Every time Charlie saw Jasper sitting on my lap watching YouTube demonstrations in regards to how chewing gum is made or pretzels are twisted, the green-eyed monster emerged full-blown. He rushed over and to the usual “Up! Up!” he added “Gi-Gi! Gi-Gi!” (his name for me, great-grandma). I made room for him on the other knee, but at his sacred watching station, one knee wasn’t enough. A 1-year-old isn’t strong sufficient to shove a 3-year-old off a lap, but he didn’t fail for lack of trying!

This might explain why Jasper enjoyed it so much when the grownups suggested putting his new construction site, with remote-controlled truck, elevator and loading ramp, on the dining room table where Charlie couldn’t reach it. It’s one thing to undertake to percentage nobly, but there’s much more gratification in being noble and then receiving permission for selfishness.

Near the end of the day, Jasper asked me frankly, “Charlie stays a long time, doesn’t he?”

For dinner I made taco salad, a favored dish of Charlie’s mom, our granddaughter Caity, so when she arrived after school to pick up her boy, we invited her to call her husband over and have dinner. By this time, hunger and tiredness was doing a number on Charlie’s commonly cheerful disposition.

“Boy, Charlie sure cries a lot,” Jasper remarked conversationally.

Two years is a big age divergence when you’re a kid. They’ll probably be good buddies when they’re much older. They did take pleasure in a bath together, and snacking on a box of gluten-free animal crackers. They both liked slipping Charlie’s dog, Zeus, leftovers from the lunch table. But I think it’ll be a long time before we see two little cousins playing Chutes and Ladders together, or making roads for Matchbox cars in the dirt pile in the back yard.

I’m sure the green-eyed monster will wither and die when the boys outgrow watching computer shows from a grandmotherly lap. In the meantime, I have to confess I sort of get enjoyment from having two handsome young men vie for my attention. It hasn’t happened since high school!

Bombing in Remote Somali City as Peace Efforts Intensify

Posted on in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Shabaab rebels linked to al-Qaeda have claimed obligation for two bomb attacks in Somalia as the United Nations, African Union and the east African diplomatic bloc IGAD cautioned jointly that months of “fragile progress” is at stake.

Witnesses said a suicide bomber had entered a hotel café in the central Somali city of Dusamareb where a delegation of lawmakers – from Mogadishu, 640 kilometers (400 miles) away – was meeting local administrators to talk about reforms.

Dusamareb is the main city of the central region of Galgadud, which for various years has been controlled by a pro-government militia, Ahlu Sunna wal Jamma, which reportedly has received weapons and training from neighboring Ethiopia.

An Ahlu Sunna spokesman said the bomber killed four people, including three visiting legislators and a local militiaman.

Tuesday’s second bombing

A parliamentarian who escaped unhurt, Dahir Amin Jesow, said six other people were injured by the blast.

Back-footed militia claims responsibility

The news agency Reuters said the assert of obligation came from a spokesman for the jihadist militia al-Shabaab, who said another bomb, planted inside a car in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, had been aimed at a Somali government worker. A Mogadishu police officer said that bombing killed three people.

In recent months, a 10,000-strong African Union deployment backing Somali government troops has gradually forced al-Shabaab to cede Mogadishu. In February, the militants lost control of Baidoa, the country’s third-largest town. They struck back early in April in Baidoa with two bombings that killed 18 people.

The AU deployment includes soldiers from Burundi, Djibouti and Uganda.

Warning to “spoilers” from AU envoy Wafula Wamunyinyi

Last September, Somali leaders signed an agreement for the formation of a government by August this year to replace the 550-member transitional assembly.

Joint warning versus “spoilers”

The “roadmap” agreement foresees a national convention, a new constitution and a new parliament to comprise Somalia’s fragmented – and ofttimes rival – administrations.

Tuesday’s joint warning from the UN, AU and east Africa’s Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) was directed at what it called “all potential spoilers”. It did not, however, name any humans or groups.

Non-compliance, the trio said, would result in “concrete action,” including requests for sanctions from east African IGAD nations, or from the UN Security Council.

Last month, Somali’s Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali claimed that al-Shabab militants were “in tatters” and had fled to the Galgala mountains in northeastern Somalia because of the increased territorial military pressure.

Mechanics Get a Little Tech Under Their Fingernails – HispanicBusiness.Com

1337529638 89 Mechanics Get a Little Tech Under Their Fingernails HispanicBusiness.com

In 1940, when Norman G. Werley was servicing a car at Werley’s Esso, he was taking parts isolated and sentiment around under the hood to diagnose problem vehicles. Seventy-two years and four generations later, diagnostics at Werley’s Auto Service Center by owner and Norman’s grandson Lanny Werley and great-grandson and head technician Steven Werley start out with a computer. Evolving automotive technologies have brought changes to the automotive repair profession. Mechanical parts are governed by the techological within today’s automobiles as each sector of a car, from the engine to the power windows, is run by a dissimilar computer. “Technology has changed embellishments, but it’s the same basic principle behind automotive,” said Lanny, who has been working at the Bern Township business since the 1960s. Its not unusual, Lanny said, to see a factory or aftermarket scanner plugged into a car and tethered to a laptop. But the new engineering science does not inevitably mean an more comfortable fix, Steven said. A simple task such as rotating the tires takes when it comes to a half-hour longer, as the mechanic will need to commune these changes to the computer. A scanner, which reads the car’s computer data, may pinpoint in which system the car is experiencing problems, said Lanny’s wife Sandi, Werley’s service manager. After that, the mechanic still ought to diagnose the precise problem, she said. Over the years, Lanny said, cars have gotten smaller, making it harder to find and move things, and have a large total of computers. “Pretty much each part of the car is controlled by technology,” said John Deatrich, automotive technology instructor at Berks Career and Technology Center East. Both Deatrich and the Werleys find that one complicatedness of all this glitzy car technology is that fixing one problem may formulate another. Computers that monitor each scheme within a car all commune with one another for the car to function. Deatrich said that the computer could observe a wheel that is locked up and make adjustments to the engine that takes power away from the engine. Or, said Lanny Werley, without the proper computer communication, replacing the radio could lead to the engine not starting. The Werleys attend classes with the Automotive Research Center, Kenhorst, to stay abreast of technical changes in the industry. Deatrich is required to have 40 hours of further and added training annually, which he uses to immerse himself into new technologies. “If you are not taking these classes, going to clinics, networking, if you are not working real hard to stay on top if it, you won’t,” he said. The modify in the industry is also attracting students with dissimilar passions and expertise. There’s room for both the tech geek who’s good with computers and the guy who likes to get dirty underneath the hood. “The industry is wide open for techs at all dissimilar skill levels and backgrounds,” Deatrich said.

Bomb Plot Raises Questions Over European Security – FederalNewsRadio.Com

Posted on in Recommended RC Car Products | No Comments »

1337527810 18 Bomb plot raises questions over European security FederalNewsRadio.comBy PAISLEY DODDS Associated Press

LONDON (AP) – A shimmy toward the body scanner, a step into the booth and a wave of the arms _ routine routine now at U.S. airports, but not inevitably in Europe.

In the wake of a foiled al-Qaida plot to bomb a jet heading to the U.S., it’s unclear whether cash-strapped Europe has the latest security instrumentation to thwart an airliner attack, or whether machines will be competent to keep up with determined terrorists.

With the summer Olympics expected to draw millions of visitors to London, airport security has taken on renewed urgency. A look at the issues:

Terror groups bent on blowing up U.S.-bound jetliners are experimenting with explosives that use non-metal detonators. That means bombs might be missed by traditionalisti metal detectors used at most international airports. The question is whether to switch to newer, pricey and more interfering scanners.

There are two types of full-body scanners in wide use in U.S. airports. Backscatter X-ray scanners apply innovative imaging technology and little doses of ionized radiation to observe objects concealed under a person’s clothing. Millimeter wave scanners use radio frequencies for the same purpose.

Peter Kant, executive vice president of Rapiscan Systems, which makes the Backscatter, says the machines have less blind spots, are fast and may detect both metal and other potential explosives concealed on someone’s body, though it’s unclear whether they may spot explosives inside someone’s body cavity. The downside is they are highpriced and numerous critics have questioned their safety.

Experts say tryouts of the millimeter wave engineering in Rome and Helsinki have resulted in frequent untrue alarms and delays.

In airports outside the U.S., most passengers plainly go through metal detectors and have their carry-on luggage scanned.

"There is a concern that overseas security doesn’t match ours. That’s an ongoing challenge," says House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, a Republican from Michigan.

Europe has never required full-body scans, and attempts to install U.S.-style backscatter machines were stalled last year when the European Commission ordered a study into their safety.

An independent body has since found that little peril is involved.

But it’s too soon to say when _ if ever _ progressed machines might be installed in European airports. Some cost more than $160,000, and in cash-strapped Europe, that’s a hefty price.

Even in Britain, which may opt out of a lot of EU dictates, there are only 20 or so backscatter machines. And those are only in trial usage.

In the United States, the Transportation Security Administration "is both the client and the operator, whereas in Europe and other regions the regulator sets requirements and the airport picks up the bill," says Ben Vogel of IHS Jane’s Airport Review. "The mix of stakeholders in Europe many times leads to divergent positions on embracing technical change."

France’s Charles de Gaulle Airport experimented with full body scanners in 2010 but decisive versus them.

"We determined that the automated detection software was not authenti enough," says Eric Heraud, a spokesman for the French civil aviation authority DGAC and the Paris airport authority.

So are the current systems sufficient to stop a terrorist?

"No scheme is 100 percent reliable. You have to constantly adjust and improve any system," Heraud says.

Millimeter-based scanners have undergone tryouts at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, where the so-called underwear bomber passed undetected on Christmas Day in 2009. The plot was thwarted when Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab failed to ignite the explosives aboard a Detroit-bound jet.

There are more than 400 mercantile airports in Europe, but only a little proportionality handle trans-Atlantic traffic.

First, it was smuggling explosives in drink bottles in a trans-Atlantic plot to blow up various U.S.-bound planes in 2006. Then it was the Nigerian underwear bomber in 2009.

A year later terrorists tried to blow up explosive-packed printers bound for Chicago-area synagogues using the alarm function of two cell phones wired to syringes full of lead azide, a moisture-resistant powder that takes only a little electric charge to explode _ much like the bomb in the latest plot.

"You may fundamentally hit or heat it," says Neil Gibson, an explosives expert. "It’s different from other substances that break down or are more volatile."

European security officials say al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is determined to target U.S.-bound airliners _ but not inevitably flights inside Europe.

"At this point, the likelihood of an overseas attack in Europe from al-Qaida seems less likely than other scenarios," says a European security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of his job. "But they unquestionably have the intent for all sorts of attacks and it appears their capability is increasing."

The Olympic torch arrives in Britain next week with a controversy already raging over U.K. border security.

Staff shortages, poor planning and a fear of racial profiling are being blamed for chaos at a heap of of the country’s busiest airports, according to John Vine, the independent chief inspector of borders and immigration who issued a damning report on the difficulties Thursday.

Britain’s government has antecedently acknowledged that security instrumentation at airports is only when it comes to 60 percent effective in detecting potentially hazardous items.

Still, the investment in Olympics security has been massive. Troops, armed police, warships and air-to-surface missiles will all be on standby to protect the public.

Security officials are planning for an array of potential nightmares for the duration of the games _ a water-based offensive from the Thames, an airline attack using a concealed bomb or a homegrown attack like the 2005 suicide bombings that killed 52 people for the duration of London’s busy rush hour.

One of their biggest fears, however, is a lone-wolf terrorist who stays off the radar until he strikes.

Other future prospects or potentials exist, too, such as a remote-controlled aircraft carrying deadly poison, according to British military Lt. Col. Brian Fahy, responsible for community relations for the duration of the London Games.

While Rapiscan, based in Torrance, Calif., is a key security collaborator for the Olympics, it is full-body progressed scanners won’t be employed at the games.

"We are supplying all of the X-ray and security equipment, but body scanning is not part of this," says Kant, the Rapiscan executive. "We know _ we believe _ the amount of security and the level of security being provided is very high. I think more than just the Olympics, what the Yemen plot has shown us is that the plot is very real _ there are known gaps _ and it needs to be taken into account."

It may not be polite or politically rectify but it works, say the Israelis.

The grilling of passengers boarding planes bound for Israel begins at the airport with a litany of security questions. After that, it’s not strange to have a body search in a private room and an instrumentation search. It goes without saying most passengers are scanned before they get on the plane.

But the routine doesn’t inevitably stop at departures.

Sometimes upon landing, passengers are herded into rooms where their liquids are squirted out, computers disassembled and batteries removed. And Israeli security agents make no apologies for profiling.

"The scheme knows regarding a suspect long before they arrive at the airport, which is something that doesn’t occur at a lot of airports around the world," says a senior Israeli airport security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of security protocol.

"The cons in this are that it breaches people’s privacy to a sure extent and likewise the scheme costs a lot of cash to run."

Associated Press writers Angela Charlton in Paris, Ian Deitch in Jerusalem, David Stringer in London and Slobodan Lekic in Brussels contributed to this report.

Although the operation has moved rather tardily — the trucks only remove 8 to 9 cubic feet of dirt per year — Joe says he’s “in no hurry to finish.”
